A Tale of Two Sock Shops

Flight Team

Slide1.jpg

It's funny how planning goes - when we set out on this adventure, we expected that our very cool website would be the main driver of sock sales. And at first, it was. www.readysetflight.com was the source for 80%+ of sales during the first six months of our existence. But the power of a marketplace cannot be underestimated and, since then, we've found most of our sales are on our shop on etsy.com. At first, we regretted that sales were not coming from the site we branded and curated ourselves - we wanted to hoist the sock banner and have people know and love Flight Socks. We thought having a presence on Etsy might dilute our message and brand. It almost certainly has - but it also has introduced us to customers we may never have reached through our own efforts. So, for those who don't know us on Etsy - check us out! - etsy.com/shop/flightapparel - we have some designs there not on our flagship site.

Sock Fanatics

Flight Team

It is pretty safe to say that a serious sock fan does not identify with just one type of sock or one brand- but rather a plethora of options! Growing up in a world where teenagers like us love socks, we have come to love a variety. Whether it is putting on a classic pair of Nike Dri-Fit Calf Socks and heading out to the tennis court for team practice or getting a new pair of Banana Republic Dress Socks, we feel that fun socks are a great way to show off your style without being loud or flashy. Here at Flight we admire all kinds of footwear and hope that you enjoy ours as well!

There's a lot of room in this sock tent

Flight Team

It's safe for us to admit that, when we started Flight, we had only a partial idea of just how big the world of socks is. We were inspired by a couple of companies that were producing custom Nike Elite socks - but we weren't really thinking about the typical Nike 'baller' as our audience. In fact, when we started selling via Etsy - and not just our own site - we thought Etsy would be a safe place to sell Flight socks. Meaning, there wouldn't be a lot of 'noise' from the Nike Elite sock crowd. We were really wrong - there is no shortage of custom Nike Elites on Etsy, and they seem to sell very well. Not only do they sell well, but we were surprised at what types of designs sell well on Etsy. Pretty much the flashiest, and in some cases 'ugliest', Elite socks sell. This was counterintuitive to us - since when you look at what is highlighted on Etsy, there's usually a very flowy, airy feel to it all. But when we look at our stats on Etsy, we're finding our most popular socks are NOT the ones we would expect - pizza, cheeseburgers, fruit loops - all the kind of quirky, funky sock designs - not necessarily the pretty, calming, neutral socks that we listed expecting them to do well.

Hitting Store Shelves Soon

Flight Team

We've gone back and forth quite a bit on selling strictly online versus selling in retail stores. There are pros and cons, of course. But we're starting to get some real interest from retailers who want to sell Flight socks - and we feel like it would not only help get the word out about the brand, but will help us learn a lot. We're launching a new collection to celebrate our retail store launch - and will have it on the website soon.

The Lifespan of a Flight Sock

Flight Team

We've had some questions about how well Flight Socks will hold up over time. From an image standpoint (will it fade?) to a wear-and-tear standpoint (when will it get holes in it?). These are great and important questions - because while we're not selling a $40 pair of socks (and yes, sock lovers, you know those are out there in abundance), we want our customers to be really happy and feel like they've made not only an exciting purchase, but a smart one, as well. Here are some photos of two socks - the Rock Solid Sock - one has been worn by a 16 year old boy for about two months - school, running, lounging, etc - and washed 15+ times. The other is brand spanking new. See if you can tell which is which.

Okay - so it's not too hard to tell which is the 'well loved' sock...it's the one on the left. But after two months of heavy teenage use, and 15+ wash/dry cycles, it really looks great. No thin spots or holes either - this is a tough sock, with high-quality image retention.

Trophy Fish Socks

Flight Team

We had a great experience last week...a new friend of Flight was helping us refine our production process and wound up telling us about his PASSION for fishing - and suggesting some fish socks would be a hit. Well, we took him up on the challenge and are launching a Trophy Fish Collection - highlighting some of the top fish patterns out there - Rainbow, Brown, Dorado, Tuna, Rooster - and even a Snapper & Carp (not a trophy fish, but still). We'll see where we can take this new collection. Check out www.readysetflight.com/shop and let us know what you think about the fish socks.

Socks on Mannequins

Flight Team

We've had a bunch of requests to show what a sock looks like 'on' - we have had socks-on-feet photos, but decided to find a mannequin foot and show all of our customers how the new crew-length socks fit. First of all, we hope no one reading this needs to EVER buy any part of a mannequin - it was kind of a creepy experience. But now that we have a mannequin foot (soon-to-be-named) - take a look at how the crew length fits. This mannequin foot is Size 9. The sock is our Buttoned Up Sock.

Thank you Christmas

Flight Team

We've had a great Christmas and are so glad for great customers who were excited about Flight socks. We shipped out dozens of pairs across the nation and have gotten some great feedback. Looking forward to celebrating the start to 2014 tomorrow night and excited to launch a bunch of awesome new designs.

Production! Shipping!

Flight Team

It's been really, really great to see the response to our socks in the past week and we're sending our first shipments off today! We kept our fingers crossed that nothing would go wrong (when you're dealing with computers, software, printers, ink, paper, heat presses, packaging - you never know) and really, nothing has gone wrong. It's been a smooth operation so far and we're excited to get these socks into the hands of our customers. So far, the holiday socks have been the most popular, as well as some of the wildlife - and the Burger Time Sock...we love those, as well. We're also excited to get some new designs posted that are going to be big hits.

Packaging Choices

Flight Team

In our own small way, we're trying to think through the experience of receiving and opening a pair of Flight socks. We've taken cue from Sock Game (a business that does custom Nike Elite socks for the basketball crowd and sells them for $45/pair)...they have a pretty slick sleeve for their sock and when we've watched videos of customers opening their socks, they even focus on how much they like the packaging and how it is to open the sleeve. We have some ideas about what getting a pair of Flight socks would look like in the future - but for now, we have a good clear envelope with a great Flight label on it. This is a pair of our Berry Avalanche Socks in packaging, ready-to-ship.

Flight Time

Flight Team

Really excited to get the site up this week and start telling a few friends and family. While we wanted to have a really nice site, we've kind of done the bare minimum to get a site up and running, focusing more of our time on actually getting great socks out there. In any case, here we go - and now it's time to learn how to find people who love socks - especially socks with bears and candy and leaves on them. We think there are a lot of people out there - now we get to find each other.
